This year, BUREN, in collaboration with Celsus Juridische Uitgeverij, presented the BUREN Thesis Prize for Insolvency Law for the seventh time to recognise the best thesis in the field of insolvency law. The award ceremony was once again held at our office in The Hague on 26 November. The winner of the BUREN Thesis Prize for Insolvency Law 2024 is Emma Verweij for her thesis ‘Third-Party releases en de WHOA. Een onderzoek naar de rechtsgeldigheid en wenselijkheid van third-party releases in het WHOA-akkoord, mede bezien vanuit Amerikaansrechtelijk perspectief’, written at Erasmus University. Emma, congratulations on winning the thesis prize!
In addition, an honourable mention was awarded to Derk von Saher for his thesis titled ‘De waarde van een toezegging zonder onderbouwing. Een jurisprudentieonderzoek naar de aannemelijkheidstoets van het toezeggingsvereiste van art. 376 lid 1 Fw volgens de creditors' bargain theory’, written at Leiden University.

The jury
The jury consisted of prof. mr. H. Koster, Professor Company Law at Leiden University, mr. dr. H.J. de Kloe, assistant professor of Insolvency Law at Rotterdam University and M.J.H. Vermeeren, lawyer and partner restructuring and insolvency at BUREN.
